Hey #toronto! My first solo show opens this Saturday @loopgallery from 2-5PM. Come have a glass of wine and look at some strange, conceptual pieces of art with me. My newest series involves #GlennGould and his iconic interpretations of the #goldbergvariations. While in the darkroom, I use light and sound to exchange musical tones with photographic tones. With Gould’s guidance, I have created my own interpretations of The Goldberg Variations.

The Goldberg Variations is an installation that continues Paluzzi’s ongoing interest in merging photographic and musical tones. .
In this iteration of his tonal series, Paluzzi focuses of the iconic recordings of Bach’s Aria with Diverse Variations (commonly known as The Goldberg Variations) by Glenn Gould in 1955 and 1981. These seminal recordings bookended Gould’s professional life, with the former being his international debut and the latter being the last recording before his death a year later. The 1955 recording, in particular, reinvigorated an interest in Bach’s Goldberg Variations because of Gould’s fast-paced tempi and clinical finger movements, bringing the baroque composer into the 20th century. As an older and more reserved performer, Gould’s second recording, in 1981, was noticeably different with a slower tempo overall.
.
In Paluzzi’s The Goldberg Variations, there are thirty-two photographs, each visualizing a single Aria or Variation from Bach’s score. The top portion of the photograph visualizes Gould’s 1955 recording, whereas the bottom portrays the 1981 recording. In order to match the tonal range of a particular piece of music, Paluzzi uses darkroom equipment as a musical instrument, operating the aperture of the enlarger lens, contrast filters, and the timer to make sound into light.

These are not digital creations. Each photogram has been crafted in the darkroom using light and time. From my last series “This Place is a Shelter,” I created an algorithm that converts a musical score into grey tones on light sensitive paper that represents musical tones. Hope to see you at he exhibition@loopgallery on Saturday, February 16 from 2-5PM.
Each image contains two “tones” from different recordings of The Goldberg Variations. The top portion is the 1955 recording by Glenn Gould, and the bottom is the 1981 recording. These two recordings bookended Gould’s career. And I’m excited to use these thirty-two pieces as inspiration for my first solo exhibition at @loopgallery, opening February 16 from 2-5PM.

My TONES installation uses photographic tones to visualize musical tones. Each piece represents a note in the score, allowing the viewer to see the sound created by the piano, violin, and cello.
.
The piece chosen for the inaugural TONES installation is “This Place is a Shelter” by @olafurarnalds. It is a simple, yet enigmatic song, that builds to a beautiful climax. I don’t really understand why this piece has a grip on my mind. Maybe one day I will understand.
.
Now that I have the mathematics behind the creation of an individual “tone,” I can turn any instrumental piece into a grid of grey rectangles. One day I intend to do a longer piece. I’ll just need to find a larger wall :)

Tomorrow, I will be exhibiting MOON (prototype) for the final time at Propeller Gallery. For the past two years, I have been using this sculpture as an example of my craft. The PLANETS series has evolved a lot since I made this. The project looks a lot different now. But with this initial sculpture, I’ve learned how to 3D print, work with a CNC machine, and execute my vision with a great team fabricators. Adios MOON (prototype)! Thanks for being the beginning.
This exhibition opens tomorrow at @propellergallery_to and features 30 artists who use space as a muse for their work! OUT OF THIS WORLD celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Royal Astronomy Society of Canada. See you there Toronto!

The Sawyers-style VIEWMASTER has been one of my favourite designs. It’s heavy than the later editions. This will be the VIEWMASTER I use for my PLANETS exhibition. There will be seven VIEWMASTERS and seven sculpture in the gallery.
THANK YOU to the @artsottawa !!! With your generous contribution through the Project X, Photography Fund, I will be able to create seven original VIEWMASTER reels for my upcoming solo exhibition, PLANETS, this fall!
