This place is a shelter

This place is a shelter is an installation that merges musical score with photo-based materials.

Tonality is a term used in both music and photography. Duration, pitch, and intensity determine the tone of an individual musical note, and when these tones are placed in a series, they carry the sounds of the score. In a photograph, tone is conveyed by the distribution of light and dark within the plane of grains or pixels.

This place is a shelter is Paluzzi’s first translation installation, where he establishes an intertextual connection between two artistic mediums. In order to create this connection, Paluzzi used the darkroom radically different than it should be used. From the timer, to the filter, to the aperture, each element comes together to create a system that transforms the darkroom enlarger into an instrument that creates a unique light frequency for each note on the piano.

Each grey rectangle represents a different note in sequence. There are 233 notes in total.
